Client: UBS Optimus Foundation, India
Brief: The Development Impact Bond (DIB) sits at the junction of a growing interest in innovative financing methods, encouraging investment in social impact over a broad range of sectors, and delivering solid financial returns for doing so. UBS Optimus Foundation (UBSOF) set out to pilot a proof concept DIB in India working with Educate Girls and CIFF.
India has the highest rate of out-of-school girls in the world. The number of child brides and sexual or other forms of female slavery is amongst the highest on the planet. Educate Girls is a non-profit organisation working in remote tribal areas in India, where massive gender gaps are the norm and girl-child education is believed to be far less important than raising goats.
The implementation of the DIB has enabled the reach of more than 10,000 girls in 150 schools over a 3 year period, with improved learning outcomes in Math, Hindi and English, as well as the engagement of communities to take ownership of girls’ educations, train village-based youth leaders serving as champions for girls’ education and improve school management.
Idea: The objective of the film was to tell the proof of concept story for DIBs worldwide, and for education DIBs in particular. It seeks to illustrate, in a meaningful and emotive way, what a DIB model is, how it works and why it is important. It also highlights the potential of what this type of funding instrument can achieve in the global development agenda, as an additional financing model that can be used to encourage meaningful outcomes, greater efficiency in the system, and reach new forms of investors.
A 12 minute character story was produced for broadcast as well as a 60sec vignette and 3 min feature for online distribution and proof of concept promotion.
Impact: The films helped UBSOF to promote this innovative social financing model and to attract more money to the social sector by creating a new market that could be attractive to private investors who want to make financial investments with significant social returns. It also serves to further the UBS and society initiative, a significant commitment to help clients address their societal concerns and to develop an industry-leading platform in which to do so.
